From a Quileute word meaning “sparkling water,” the name Sol Duc encompasses several key locations in this northern area of the Olympic National Park:
- The Sol Duc River (and Valley)
- Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort
- Sol Duc Campgrounds
- Sol Duc Trailhead
Entering from Hwy 101, the traveler drives south along Sol Duc Hot Springs Rd for 12 miles (19km,) weaving through a gorgeous expanse of old forest. There are several stops along the way with park informational areas or trail access. At the end of the line are Eagle Ranger Station and the areas mentioned above, with a large parking lot for trailhead access. Here many backpackers and climbers begin their journey for Mount Olympus.
The campground is extremely popular, requiring reservations for most sites throughout the season. The Hot Springs Resort is equally popular, with cabins and RV parking available.
There is a gift shop at the resort with basic supplies and an information desk.
In addition to the resort-renting crowd and the backpacking crowd, many day hikers come here simply to see Sol Duc Falls, using a short out-and back trail that is veritably trampled in the peak season. Don’t come expecting peace & quiet unless in the dead of winter!
