Nestled in the low northern slopes of the Klahhane Ridge, Heart O’ the Hills Campground is a quiet but popular getaway in the Olympic National Park. Here you are only 20 minutes from stunning Hurricane Ridge uphill, and equally distant to supply stops in Port Angeles such as Safeway, Wal-Mart, gas stations, outfitters, and great dining along the waterfront.
This is also one of the largest campgrounds on the peninsula at 105 sites, but still fills up quickly in the summer, especially on holiday weekends. Prior to Labor Day in 2020 I saw campers snatching up the best sites as early as Wednesday
There is a short out-and-back “Heart O’ the Forest” trail located on Loop E for the light-hearted hiker. Near the entrance station are trailheads to the more formidable Lake Angeles Trail and Heather Park Trail. These both head south and meet to form a loop linking up to the Klahanne Ridge Trail, which leads further up to Hurricane Ridge, a must-see of the ONP and a true gem of the peninsula.
